Curriculum - Art
Through the teaching of Art we hope pupils will become visually perceptive, develop powers of observation and become capable of selecting, interpreting and recording what they see, think, feel and know using art media. They learn about some of the major artistic figures and periods of art history and learn to appreciate art in the world around them. We help to develop pupils' practical skills as well as seeing art as a source of enjoyment and understanding.
From Nursery to Year 6 there are opportunities for drawing, painting, design, crafts and ICT. They work on 2D and 3D projects and make appropriate use of technology in ICT and photography. They may work individually or in groups or as a whole class. We have a large art room for individuals and classes to use.
Pupils keep a portfolio containing examples of their work over the years. They each have a sketchbook in which they keep notes, sketches, investigations and completed work. The self assessment wheel at the end of the topics helps to build up a language for speaking about art as well as focusing on how they viewed their efforts.
Occasionally pupils may take part in projects with visiting artists or extend their skills by using their sketchbooks on trips out. They may enter local and national competitions and we have found they have had much success when they do. We often have exhibitions and galleries in school to view pupils' work.
