Foundation Stage Nursery

The Nursery follows a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum based on first hand experience with
the emphasis on learning through play. Throughout the year the children follow half - termly topics which
provide them with a wide range of activities that stimulate and challenge whilst encouraging
independence.

The children in the Nursery are part of the 'Early Years Foundation Stage' which is organised into six
areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development aims to develop self confidence, independence and an
ability to build positive relationships with others. This is achieved through play activities such as stories,
rhymes and role play.

Communication, Language and Literacy enables children to communicate their thoughts and feelings
through talk and play with adults and their peers. These skills are developed through speaking and
listening, hearing and saying letter sounds and mark making.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy supports children to develop their understanding of
maths. Number rhymes, games and practical activities enable the children to develop confidence with
counting, measuring, shape, sorting and problem solving.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World encourages the children to explore the world around
them. Their learning will be supported through opportunities for them to study the natural environment of
creatures and plants and for them to use a range of materials and tools safely.

Physical Development allows the children to gain confidence in their skills of co-ordination, control,
manipulation and movement. Appropriate physical activities which develop gross and fine motor skills
are encouraged.

Creative Development develops the children's self-expression and imagination. They will experiment
with colour, shape and movement through art, music and drama activities.
