Curriculum - History

History is a valued part of the curriculum at Runnymede St Edward’sSchool, as it provides opportunities for the children to explore, appreciate and understand the world in which they live and how it has evolved. History aims to enable pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of significant historical events and people as well as developing their interest and enjoyment of historical experiences and build confidence and understanding.

Pupils have experienced Historical events through educational trips and historical interpreters.

Florence Nightingale

History

During the topic of ‘Florence Nightingale’ the children compared nurses of the past to those of today. Pupils were very fortunate to have a visit from one of our grandmothers, who is a retired nurse.

Year One took a trip to Sudley House to find out how our toys are different from those in the past.

Year Two - Norton Priory

As part of our Christmas Celebrations, Year Two travelled back in time to Norton Priory to celebrate a Victorian Christmas. Activities included, decorating the tree, playing Victorian games, making Victorian toys, listening to stories and best of all, helping to make Christmas pudding.

Saxons

Gary Wadeson, a historical interpreter, brought 'Saxons' to life for our Year 3 pupils. Pupils had the opportunity to explore Historical Anglo Saxon artefacts, look at clothing and listen to stories from Saxon times.

Tudors

Year 4 pupils had a visit from ‘Lucy the Tudor’. The pupils engaged in a number of fantastic activities such as, butter and flour making, making wool, playing with Tudor toys, dressing in traditional Tudor clothing and making the Tudor rose.

Every year, Year 4 children embark on a trip to Speke Hall as part of their ‘Tudor Life’ topic.  The visit allows the children to explore Tudor family life inside a Tudor home.
