Curriculum - Science
Science plays a key part in the curriculum at Runnymede St Edward's School, with a focus on developing an understanding of our environment, primarily through experience, exploration, and interaction with scientific phenomena. At Foundation Stage play is integral to learning. It is planned and structured to enhance children's scientific learning. As the children move into the Key Stages, Science is more formalised with a focus on pupils planning and investigating topics.
Our aim in science is to:
- promote interest, enjoyment and enthusiasm in all pupils.
- enable pupils to develop an enquiring mind and a scientific approach to problem solving.
- promote an awareness of continuing scientific advances and their impact on society.
- enable children, through work in science, to understand major scientific ideas and to appreciate how these develop and contribute to technological change, and to recognise the cultural significance of science and its world wide development.
- allow children to understand the relationship between science and everyday life, materials and situations.
- enable children to develop attitudes of curiosity, tolerance, perseverance and enquiry.
- Instil good health and safety practices.
- enable science to contribute to the school curriculum.
- support and develop children’s literacy and numeracy skills within a scientific concept.
- provide clear guidance to staff members about the details in teaching science.
The pupils benefit from a range of visitors to the school and trips out to extend their scientific knowledge and understanding. Our immediate environment and extensive grounds provide a wealth of learning opportunities for all ages.
