Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
The children in Year One experience a rich and varied curriculum. They are now taking part in more formal lessons that encompass all the Key Stage One subjects. They are encouraged to be more
independent and to put forward their own views and ideas.
Life in Year One is very busy but interesting and the children thrive on the knowledge put before them.
Within the year they develop into young scholars appreciating what and how they learn and enjoying the
achievements they make.
CDT
Year One have been learning about how important it is to eat lots of fruit. They have tasted lots of
different fruits and discussed their colour, texture and taste. In groups they have designed and made a
fruit salad using their newly acquired cutting and slicing skills. They produced some wonderful fruit
salads, and enjoyed eating them too.

Year 1 Visit Sudley House
Year 1 enjoyed an afternoon at Sudley House, Mossley Hill. The session was planned to support the
history scheme of work, ‘How are our toys different from those in the past?’ The children were
introduced to the ‘old’ toys collection at Sudley House helping them identify similarities and differences
between ‘old’ and ‘new’ toys. Great fun was had playing with the replica old toys – especially the ‘cup
and ball’ which was a challenge to us all! The snap cards with images of ‘old’ toys and their modern
equivalent proved a favourite too. Then it was off to the classroom to draw a picture of our favourite ‘old’
or ‘new’ toy before returning to school after a very educational and interesting afternoon.

Year 1 and the ‘Take One Picture’ project
Year 1 contributed to the ‘Take One Picture’ project, by producing some fantastic fish sculptures. They
had looked closely at the beautiful painting of ‘Tobias and the Angel’ by Verrocchio and had been
fascinated by the different aspects of the picture especially the story about the fish. We discovered that
Verrocchio had also been a sculptor and as our art topic for this term was, ‘What is a sculpture?’ we
decided to look at the different sculptures that Verrocchio had produced. These gave the children ideas
and inspiration for their own sculpture of a fish. They worked hard to shape, paint and decorate their
sculptures.
